INTRODUCTION

The 2009 North Carolina Essential Standards for Science do not contain standards that directly address dissection, nor do they direct, recommend, or require this practice. The decision whether or not to dissect or use alternatives is one that is made by the local education agency/school system.


The resources listed here provide a start for those wishing to develop policy to address dissection and alternatives to dissection. It is by no means a comprehensive or all-inclusive listing of available resources.

  • The Science Bank This site contains a vast library resources for multiple organisms for a variety of grade levels, including an extensive lending library.
  • Biology Corner This site contains examinations of a variety of organisms and some specific organism body parts (such as sheep brains and cow eyes).
  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) This site contains several virtual labs that address extension topics regarding comparative anatomy that may be used in lieu of activities that involve dissection.
