  • Session Purpose/Overview: This session focuses on participants engaging in strategies for empowering teachers to plan and deliver high-quality science instruction. Participants will use principles grounded in Negotiating Science: The Critical Role of Argument in Student Inquiry by Brian Hand et al and integrate the Claims-Evidence-Reasoning model to increase educator effectiveness and achievement for all students.
  • Session Description: This session will introduce participants to the Claims-Evidence-Reasoning model for argument in K-12 science education and the Science Writing Heuristic.

    • Explore the elements associated with engaging in argument from evidence
    • Engage in activities that apply the Claims-Evidence-Reasoning model and Science Writing Heuristic
    • Link activities to Professional Teaching Standards, NC Science Essential Standards, Common Core Literacy Standards, A Framework for K-12 Science Education, and NC’s Home Base resources.
  • Session Outcome: After the session, participants will be able to work with their LEA leadership team to improve current instructional resources by embedding activities that apply the Claims-Evidence-Reasoning model and Science Writing Heuristic.
